City logistics by cargo bike in Miami

DHL Express and REEF Technology, an operator of parking, mobility and logistics centers in North America, have launched a pilot project to test environmentally friendly inner-city deliveries in Miami. Together, they are relying on the use of the Bremen-based company's electrified Rytle Cargobikes MOVR.

The two-lane Cargobikes MOVR used in the city center are equipped with interchangeable boxes, which can also be used individually for delivery without a carrier vehicle thanks to their standard dimensions. The implemented telematics and data system also enables the partners to further increase efficiency through analysis options for possible route optimization. Each MOVR deployed enables DHL to take a conventional delivery truck off the road, reducing traffic, noise and pollution in Miami while continuing to ensure efficient deliveries for customers. REEF Technology's holistic approach is to build an inner-city ecosystem based on parking space. This will create mobility and logistics hubs to supply cities, residents and businesses. The third building block is the connecting logistics solution consisting of suitable hardware and software from Rytle. The deployment of the four Rytle MOVRs in downtown Miami is expected to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 101,000 kilograms per year.

In this project, the parking garage specialist provides inner-city spaces that serve as a home base for the Rytle Cargobikes, among other things. The logistics company DHL Express uses these spaces to deliver the pre-picked swap boxes in the morning. A trailer is used for this purpose, which can deliver up to nine boxes to the final location. The day's returns are then returned to the swap boxes in the afternoon. "We are excited to work with DHL and the City of Miami to shape the future of last-block delivery," commented Ari Ojalvo, CEO of REEF Technology. Greg Hewitt, US CEO of DHL Express, added: "We are excited about the opportunity to connect the REEF ecosystem in use with the new eco-friendly vehicles. Not only does this support our efforts to reduce emissions, but it helps us tremendously to improve the safety, productivity and cost challenges of inner city delivery."
