"Whisper brakes" for over 50,000 freight wagons

More and more quiet freight wagons are being used on German railways. DB Cargo in Cologne has now equipped its 50,500 wagons with noise-reducing LL composite soles.

This means that 80 percent of the DB freight wagon fleet in Germany is now equipped with so-called whisper brakes. The brakes roughen the wagon wheels significantly less, reducing noise emissions during the journey by ten decibels. "Relieving residents living near railroad lines by consistently reducing rail noise is very important to us. Together with our customers, we want to shift more traffic to environmentally friendly rail. This can only succeed if we simultaneously become noticeably quieter in rail freight transport," said Alexander Doll, Member of the Executive Board for Finance, Freight Transport and Logistics at Deutsche Bahn. "By retrofitting our freight wagons with low-noise brakes, we are making a significant contribution," said Doll. By 2020, all 63,000 freight wagons operated by DB Cargo in Germany are to be retrofitted in this way.
