Storage- and racking systems
19.1 kilometers of shelving for new goods distribution center in Bochum

Hamburg/Bochum, 26.09.2017 - The car manufacturer Opel has opened its European distribution center for spare parts logistics in Bochum Langendreer. From now on, over 11 million Opel drivers throughout Europe will be supplied with spare parts from the warehouse, which is around 12 soccer fields in size. The heart of the warehouse is a Jungheinrich racking system with a total length of more than 19.1 kilometers.
Multi-user racking and shelving systems were installed for the storage of palletized goods and various small parts. "Thanks to our 60 years of experience, we know that racking is the most fundamental system component in a warehouse. Without racking, there is no warehouse. We at Jungheinrich therefore invest a lot of time and energy in offering our customers the right racking system for them. In Bochum, we were able to draw on our many years of experience in the automotive industry to design a customized racking system for Opel. We worked together as partners from the very beginning in planning the system," explains Ralph Matenia, the responsible project manager at Jungheinrich.

Jungheinrich has been building racking for 60 years. Today, the company is one of the world's leading suppliers of racking systems for warehouses of all kinds. The portfolio includes racking for the storage of pallets, containers, trays and cartons through to long goods. As one of the world's largest manufacturers of industrial trucks, Jungheinrich has in-depth knowledge of the requirements for forklift-operated racking. Jungheinrich uses the experience gained from the planning, project planning, handling and commissioning of many thousands of warehouses worldwide to find the right warehouse solution for each of its customers. The focus is always on specific customer benefits. The 200,000 square meter warehouse in Bochum Langendreer is designed for operation with reach trucks. This guarantees a high degree of flexibility in use combined with high availability. The Jungheinrich reach trucks of type ETM 216 have a lifting height of 8,720 mm. Thanks to the connection to the Opel WMS, the trucks can automatically position their forks at the correct height for all pallet locations to be approached. A special feature is the use of EZS 350 order picking tractors, which enable Opel to pick orders from several customers in one tour on several levels. In the final expansion stage, Opel will use around 60 industrial trucks in its warehouse. red
