Dematic: High-performance multishuttles for the deep-freeze warehouse
Dematic GmbH is automating another system for the Italian company Polo SpA. The intralogistics specialist is installing two multishuttle systems in the food retailer's fresh and frozen food warehouse. The reason for the automation was the increase in order volume. The Dematic solution will significantly increase throughput in the warehouse, enabling Polo to cope with the high order volume and reduce its handling costs per item. The retailer had already commissioned Dematic to install an automated deep-freeze warehouse in 2008. Dematic is now equipping the warehouse, which is divided into "frozen" and "chilled" temperature zones, with two multishuttle systems. 30 shelving levels and 30 Dematic Multishuttles "2 Freeze" will be installed in separate aisles. Both aisles have two vertical lifts at their ends, which the shuttles can use to access items on different levels. This is called a two-head configuration. Polo uses the multishuttle system for picking, order picking and palletizing. In future, order picking will be automated according to the goods-to-person principle. The two-head configuration maximizes throughput and thus prevents bottlenecks in outgoing goods. The result is increased efficiency. This not only reduces unit costs for Polo. The faster processes also reduce delivery times. As the goods remain in the temperature-controlled shuttle until dispatch, there is no interruption to the temperature-controlled supply chain, which benefits the quality of the food.
