Status of the Elbe ferry Cuxhaven - Brunsbüttel: it remains difficult
The management explains the background to this development: The engine damage, due to which the ferry service had to be interrupted on Monday, has since been repaired. However, the owners ordered the ferry "Saaremaa" to the shipyard in Wewelsfleet on Thursday evening. On Monday evening, the owners' company had already prohibited the use of the ship until further notice - despite an earlier agreement according to which ferry operations in this form were guaranteed until mid-November. One of the reasons given by the owners is that the state has not yet issued a positive written statement. "This step by the owner company is all the more regrettable," says Elb-Link Managing Director Bernd Bässmann, "as both the utilization of the ferry and the profitability of the operation have been sustainably improved since the ferry route was taken over in May. In addition, the management continues to see considerable potential for increasing passenger and freight volumes." The ferry route was only taken over from the insolvent predecessor company in the summer as part of a "management buy-out" as an interim solution. Since then, Elb-Link has transported around 180,000 passengers, 58,000 cars and 7,000 freight units.
In order to be able to resume the ferry line and steer it into safe waters, two perspectives are being pursued in the current discussions: On the one hand, to create the economic framework conditions for smooth continued operation in the short term with the help of financially strong investors and support from the state governments; on the other hand, to organize the shuttle service across the Elbe with two, possibly smaller ships at shorter intervals in the long term and thus be able to operate more profitably. "The current management of Elb-Link has shown that we have been able to establish a reliable and successful ferry service with great commitment and against tough resistance," says Bässmann. red
