Kiel Port Award 2019 for Norbert Brackmann

The German government's coordinator for the maritime industry, Norbert Brackmann, was awarded the 2019 Port Prize at the "Sprottenback", the traditional social event for companies in Kiel's port industry, on September 5.

In his role as Chairman of the Advisory Board of Seehafen Kiel, the Managing Partner of Sartori & Berger, Jens B. Knudsen, paid tribute to the award winner in his laudatory speech: "Norbert Brackmann is campaigning at federal level for competitive framework conditions for the use of shore-side electricity. This provides shipping and ports with economic incentives for efficient climate protection." In May, the Federal Government's coordinator for the maritime industry inaugurated the Port of Kiel's first shore-side power system at Norwegenkai together with the Minister President of Schleswig-Holstein and the Lord Mayor of the state capital. Port award winner Norbert Brackmann: "We want to financially support the construction of further shore-side power plants and, among other things, reduce the EEG levy on shore-side power. As many shipping companies as possible should make use of shore-side power in our ports in future."

At Norwegenkai, Color Line's large cruise ferries are now supplied with shore power every day. This means that 3,000 tons of the greenhouse gas carbon dioxide (CO2) can be saved every year while the ships are in port. In addition, emissions of sulphur, nitrogen oxides and particulate matter are reduced to zero. Color Line is thus a pioneer and a role model in Kiel. Following the success at Norwegenkai, the Port of Kiel is already about to start construction of another shore power plant. The cruise terminal at Ostseekai, from where the ferry terminal at Schwedenkai is also to be supplied, will be equipped in the coming months. Dr. Dirk Claus, Managing Director of Seehafen Kiel GmbH & Co KG: "The most powerful shore-side power plant on the German coast is being built. For the first time, two ships can be supplied with green electricity from land at the same time." The start of test operations is planned for next summer. The medium-term goal is to cover 60 % of the energy requirements of ships calling at Kiel with shore power. Kiel's City President Hans-Werner Tovar commented: "Kiel is a climate protection city and is consistently implementing the Blue Port concept developed together with the port. This makes us one of the most environmentally friendly ports in Europe."
