Automatic processing with more speed
Sustainable logistics solution for faster order processing
SSI Schaefer implements a highly automated picking and dispatch system for Sanicare, one of the largest mail-order pharmacies in Germany. The new system can handle more than half of the picking processes automatically.
With a throughput time of 20 minutes per parcel, up to 10,000 shipments are expected to leave the logistics center every day. Sanicare advises and supports 1.6 million customers nationwide. In June 2018, the company modernized its warehouses with a new logistics system with SSI Schaefer as general contractor. After a three-month planning phase, the conversion started at the beginning of April 2018, running parallel to existing operations, and was completed in June.
1,000 shipments per hour
55% of all picking processes are automated and only have to go through a final inspection process before they are dispatched. The new system can therefore process up to around 1,000 consignments within an hour. Overall, BS-Apotheken OHG achieves a degree of automation of 70 percent of all shipments to be delivered with the existing picking machines. "The conversion helps us to process orders quickly, even during large waves of orders, which often occur at the beginning of the week, to work more efficiently and thus achieve greater customer satisfaction," says a delighted Heinrich Meyer, owner of BS-Apotheken OHG, the owner of Sanicare.
The A-Frame automatic picking system from SSI Schaefer, which contains the 850 top items, was installed for picking the fast-moving items. After the items are ejected from the machine onto the collection belt, the products are transferred directly to the customer cartons via the filling point. This eliminates the need for a separate and costly repacking process. "Filling cartons directly from such a system is unique in this form in the mail-order pharmacy sector," emphasizes the owner of BS-Apotheken OHG.
