Port of Rotterdam Authority launches Internet of Things platform
The Port of Rotterdam Authority has had an Internet of Things platform developed. This is intended to record precise water and weather data and thus enable more accurate planning of shipping traffic.
Real-time information for better processes
Using an extensive network of sensors, the system provides accurate and up-to-date data that can be used to plan the handling of ships more precisely. The development of the IoT platform was announced a year ago by the cooperating partners IBM, Cisco, Esri and Axians and has now been handed over under the management of the Port Authority.
"Step towards the smartest port"
"A nice step in the development of Rotterdam into the 'smartest port'," says Ronald Paul, Chief Operating Officer of the Port of Rotterdam Authority. "But at least as important is the fact that the cloud platform and the real-time information it generates, for example on infrastructure, water and weather conditions, will enable us to further improve mission-critical processes in the service we provide to our customers."
IoT platform as the basis for autonomous shipping
The platform elements that have now been implemented provide the Port of Rotterdam Authority with a secure and reliable basis for rapid innovation, with access to the latest technologies: edge computing, real-time analysis, artificial intelligence, highly accurate data and blockchain are among them. Sensors positioned on and in quay walls, dolphins, (water) roads and traffic signs generate continuous baseline measurement data and can also communicate with other systems. The aim is to create the basis for supporting autonomous shipping in the port of Rotterdam in the future.
