Port of Antwerp continues on record course

Port of Antwerp

Antwerp, 22 April 2016 - In the first quarter of 2016, the port of Antwerp handled 53,265,552 tons of freight, 3.9 percent more than in the same quarter of the previous year. The container volume (in TEU) performed particularly well in terms of throughput, increasing by 4.6 percent.

Growth in the liquid goods sector was even stronger at 10.6 percent. In terms of freight volume, March was the best month ever for the port of Antwerp.

"These are excellent growth figures, with which we are naturally extremely satisfied. However, given the volatility of the market, it is not possible to make a forecast for the year as a whole," says Dr. Dieter Lindenblatt, Port of Antwerp representative for Germany.

Container and breakbulk

Container tonnage rose by 3.2% in the first quarter, reaching 29,143,365 tons. This corresponds to a volume of 2,459,847 TEU and an increase of 4.6% compared to the same period last year.

The RoRo volume remained stable with a slight increase of 0.4% to 1,111,278 tons. At the same time, a total of 308,484, or 5.7%, more vehicles were handled. There was also an increase in breakbulk compared to the previous year, due in particular to the volume of steel handled, which grew by 14.5% to 1,806,160 tons. At the end of March, the total volume of breakbulk reached 2,373,819 tons, an increase of 2.4% compared to the same period last year.

Liquid bulkIn the first three months of this year, liquid bulk volumes grew by 10.6 percent to 17,693,219 tons. In terms of oil derivatives, the port of Antwerp recorded growth of 17.0 percent to a total of 13,178,993 tons handled in the first quarter.

Dry bulkThe handling of dry bulk in the port reached a total volume of 2,943,871 tons, which represents a decrease of 17.9% compared to the first quarter of 2015. The reason for the result in this sector is the falling demand for coal, which led to a sharp drop of 81.1% to 69,975 tons. The planned conversion of the coal-fired power plant in Langerlo, Belgium, had a significant impact on this result. The volume of ore handled in the port of Antwerp fell by 33.9 percent to 465,796 tons.

Seagoing vesselsIn the first quarter, 3,535 seagoing vessels called at the port of Antwerp, 3.7 percent more than in the same period last year. At the same time, gross tonnage rose by 15.2 percent to 96,557,856 GT. red
