Mini hub and Movr box from Rytle

UPS expands city logistics project in Munich

Following its successful launch last year, UPS is further expanding its city logistics solution for parcel delivery in Munich. A mini-hub and three additional Box Movr e-cargo bikes are now also being used here. Since the start of the project in July 2017, UPS has more than tripled the number of parcels delivered in the city using low-emission solutions.

"UPS has supported the development of the Box Movr and contributed to the optimization of the e-cargo bike by collecting practical data and sharing experiences," says Rainer Kiehl, Project Manager City Logistics UPS Germany. "With the mini-hub, we are now looking for new ways to refine our city logistics solutions. We now have a total of more than 2,800 low-emission stops in the city every day - this is part of our transition to alternative fuels. This project in Munich has global significance, and the feedback from our drivers and customers flows directly into the further development of our 'rolling laboratories'."

The mini-hub serves as a depot for nine bicycle boxes, which are first loaded at the branch, pre-sorted and then taken to the mini-hub in Türkenstraße. From there, they are delivered throughout Maxvorstadt using the electrically assisted Box Movr cargo bike. The special feature of the cargo bikes: The removable box enables the delivery staff to load and unload the cargo bikes more quickly. Instead of reloading the parcels individually, the delivery staff only have to swap the empty box at the mini-hub for a loaded one. This usually takes less than two minutes.

By expanding its city logistics solution, UPS is saving 14 diesel-powered delivery vehicles every day. UPS has already been using electrically assisted and conventional cargo bikes and handcarts to deliver parcels in Munich since 2017. This is a contribution to UPS's goal of reducing greenhouse gas emissions from its global ground operations by twelve percent by 2025. Currently, 35 drivers in Munich deliver parcels using bicycles and handcarts.

UPS is also part of the public-private cooperation "City2Share". Here, the city of Munich, local industry partners and scientists are working together to improve the quality of life in German cities. Once the project is complete, City2Share experts will scientifically evaluate the results and use the data to implement further sustainability projects in Munich and other cities.
