Early warning system for improved processes in freight logistics

Vienna, 06.08.2018 - Claudio di Ciccio and his team at the Institute for Information Business at the Vienna University of Economics and Business have developed an early warning system to inform logistics companies about changes to flight routes at an earlier stage. In addition to the massive costs that can arise in freight logistics due to flight delays or flight changes, this also harms the environment.

It is not uncommon for trucks waiting to pick up containers at the wrong airport to be diverted. The newly developed early detection system is designed to inform logistics companies more quickly about changes to flight routes. The aim is to avoid unnecessary truck routes in future and reduce CO2 emissions in Europe by 6.5 million tons. It is particularly problematic for logistics companies when freight planes have to be diverted at short notice due to extreme weather conditions, for example, and their trucks are stranded at the originally planned airport for nothing.

Di Ciccio explains the advantages of the system: "Firstly, CO2 emissions can be reduced efficiently because unnecessary routes and empty miles are minimized. Secondly, this reduces the fuel consumption of the trucks and also shortens transport times - both factors that in turn save costs for companies."

For their work, Di Ciccio and his team used publicly available data such as the current aircraft position, speed, altitude, timestamps and much more. Using this data, they developed a self-learning algorithm and "trained" it with global flight data. mm
