Editorial: One goal, many solutions

The images of flooding in some parts of Germany that reached us in early summer and the very high temperatures that we are experiencing again this year make it clear that the issue of sustainability must not be neglected. Only by using resources and emissions responsibly and thoughtfully will it be possible to counteract climate change.

In many areas, logistics is already making a considerable contribution to sustainability. The challenges facing the industry are extremely complex: complex supply chains, with numerous different players and strong competitive and time pressure, make it difficult for many logistics companies to position themselves as they would actually like to in terms of "green" logistics and intralogistics.

However, sustainability and competitiveness are by no means mutually exclusive these days. To demonstrate this, among other things, materialfluss is focusing on the topic of green logistics in this issue. It turns out that the topic is extremely diverse and there are various approaches to conserving resources and avoiding emissions - from sustainably designed logistics properties to smart supply chain software. In this issue, you can read about the importance the topic currently has in the industry and the specific challenges and solutions that exist.

New technologies, such as artificial intelligence, are also opening up previously unimagined possibilities in this area. In this interview, Dr. Kerstin Dobers from Fraunhofer IML reveals which technological innovations companies can use to position themselves even more sustainably. Industry experts also provide specific insights into what sustainability can look like in logistics.

With materialfluss SPEKTRUM, the traditional "summer break" is just around the corner for the magazine. We will of course keep you up to date with the latest news and interesting facts from the world of intralogistics and logistics online and in the materialfluss newsletter. We will be back in September with issue 8-9/2024, featuring a special on AGVs, AGVs and robotics and reporting on the upcoming Fachpack 2024.

Best wishes and have a great summer!

Yours
