"Green logistics is a decisive factor in achieving climate targets"

What trends and developments are there in the industry when it comes to green logistics? Experts provide insights:

Stefan Borggreve, CDO and member of the Management Board at Hellmann Worldwide Logistics © Hellmann Worldwide Logistics

materialfluss: In your opinion, what significance does the topic of green logistics currently have in the industry?

Borggreve: Green logistics is a decisive factor in achieving climate targets and is therefore becoming increasingly important - for us as a global logistics provider and for our customers. The aim is to reduce emissions or avoid them completely in the long term. Interest in climate-neutral logistics is growing significantly and our customers very often ask specifically for solutions to decarbonize the supply chain. However, this is still associated with higher costs in many applications, for example due to electrification or the use of alternative fuels, which often cannot be borne by the market due to the tense economic situation. This is one of the major challenges we are currently facing as an industry.

materialfluss: To what extent is your company driving forward the topic of green logistics?

Borggreve: We want to drastically reduce our ecological footprint in the coming years by further digitalizing our processes in order to bundle transports and thus efficiently reduce emissions. At the same time, we are driving forward the switch to alternativeCO2-neutral drives by converting ourselves, but also by supporting our customers and partners on their way to greater sustainability. We are convinced that our greatest potential for truly green logistics lies in all players working together. To further decarbonize logistics, we not only need the support of our customers, but also of politicians - for example, by creating the appropriate infrastructure, providing financial support and promoting innovative technologies as well as streamlined and accelerated procurement and approval procedures.
