DPD uses cargo bikes in Leipzig
DPD is testing the delivery of parcels by cargo bike in Leipzig. The parcel and express service provider is now using Rytle MovR cargo bikes to deliver parcels to parts of Leipzig city center.
The company has stationed three of the electronic bikes on site. For residents in the Gohlis district, parcel delivery is therefore locally emission-free. Parking spaces rented in a centrally located parking garage not only serve as a parking space for the cargo bikes, but also fulfill the purpose of a micro-depot. Parcels for the Gohlis district are delivered to the micro-depot in the morning and then distributed by cargo bike.
Interchangeable boxes save time
The Rytle MovR cargo bike is designed to remain maneuverable even when fully loaded. The built-in electric motor assists with pedaling and takes the bike up to 25 km/h. Secondly, the parcels are stored in interchangeable boxes. These are loaded with parcels at the central micro-depot in the morning. The boxes are then attached to the bikes. When a swap box is empty, the riders can return to the micro-depot and replace it with a full one.
DPD has already stationed cargo bikes in various German cities and is testing where the targeted use of electric bikes can increase the efficiency of parcel deliveries. The parcel and express service provider recently initiated a new project in Constance, in which a so-called swap body serves as a storage location for the cargo bikes and at the same time as a transshipment point for parcels.
