Skatstadt Altenburg: Altenburg playing card factory and Panattoni celebrate groundbreaking ceremony

Panattoni, project developer for industrial and logistics real estate in Europe, celebrated the ground-breaking ceremony for the new building in Altenburg, Thuringia, together with Spielkartenfabrik Altenburg on April 20.

Spielkartenfabrik Altenburg is the oldest known company in the development and production of playing cards in Europe and part of the internationally active playing card manufacturer Cartamundi from Belgium. In addition to representatives from ASS Altenburger / Cartamundi, Panattoni and the general contractor Goldbeck, the event was attended by the State Secretary of the Ministry of Economic Affairs, Science and Digital Society of the Free State of Thuringia, Carsten Feller, the State Development Corporation of Thuringia, represented by Andreas Krey, and the Lord Mayor of Altenburg, André Neumann.

The sustainable property is being built on a brownfield site of around 77,500 m² and will have a total usable area of approx. 20,500 m² once completed. This includes 17,500 m² of production and storage space and approx. 2,700 m² of office and social space. Extensive technical building equipment will enable the East Thuringian card and game producer of traditional playing cards to expand its versatile product range of family, educational and board games. The future building will be used for production, storage, logistics, administration and as a representative location for customers and partners.

"The build-to-suit solution created with Panattoni for our new site creates the ideal conditions for us to continue the success story of the development of the Altenburg playing card factory. Not only does it allow us to work innovatively on improving production processes and possibilities, but we are also creating an optimal and sustainable environment for our employees. This is a declared goal of the Cartamundi Group," says Jürgen Gehr, Vice President Publishing CEE of the Cartamundi Group and Managing Director of Spielkartenfabrik Altenburg GmbH.

Carsten Feller, State Secretary in the Thuringian Ministry of Economic Affairs, believes that the investment will secure the competitiveness and further growth of the playing card factory at its traditional location in Altenburg for years to come. "The town of Altenburg is famous for the development of the game of skat in the 19th century. To this day, the region draws economic strength and tourist appeal from these roots. The new factory will help to maintain and expand Altenburg's position as a German card game center." In addition, the well-known card and game producer will be an important anchor company in the overall concept of the planned "Altenburg Games World", which is also supported by the state.

In terms of resource-conserving and sustainable development, Panattoni is aiming for DGNB Platinum certification for the building. To this end, the developer is implementing a comprehensive package of measures to achieve climate, environmental and species protection as well as social sustainability. In addition to the installation of a cistern for water collection and use for toilet flushing and irrigation, e-charging stations will ensure a low-emission mobility solution. The roof construction of the new building will also be pre-equipped for a photovoltaic system. Panattoni designed the outdoor areas of the property with a boules court and barbecue area as wellbeing areas for employees. Furthermore, generous compensation areas for tree planting, wildflower meadows and a large number of bee and nesting boxes are planned.

"Panattoni is developing the property on the LEG site in Altenburg-Nordost, which has excellent connections to the city center, the B93 and B180 federal highways and Altenburg train station," says Andreas Krey, Managing Director of Landesentwicklungsgesellschaft Thüringen mbH. "It is a pre-used military conversion site that we have reclaimed for industrial use through comprehensive development measures."

In order to enable the optimal use of the entire site for the new building and potential expansion options, the city has amended the development plan, and it will also be necessary to de-dedicate and dismantle a public road and relocate a drinking water pipeline.

"In Altenburg, we are developing an extensive project with great economic significance for the state of Thuringia. With the joint ground-breaking ceremony, we are now taking an important step towards realizing the project. We would like to thank everyone involved for the trusting and cooperative partnership and collaboration," commented Fred-Markus Bohne, Managing Partner at Panattoni.
