Intralogistics provider and battery manufacturer cooperate
KION Battery Systems starts production of lithium-ion batteries
KION Battery Systems (KBS), a joint venture between the KION Group and BMZ Holding, has started producing lithium-ion batteries for industrial trucks. In summer 2019, the intralogistics provider and the battery manufacturer announced a strategic partnership and the establishment of their own production facility in Karlstein am Main, the headquarters of the BMZ Group.
The aim of the joint venture is to expand the KION Group brands' lithium-ion product range and production capacities in order to best meet the rapidly growing demand for lithium-ion battery systems in the intralogistics sector - especially in the EMEA region.
"Following the successful start of production, we are now focusing on expanding capacity and developing new battery systems," says Carsten Harnisch, Managing Director of KION Battery Systems. The two new production lines in the newly built, approximately 4,000 square meter production hall can produce more than 12,000 batteries per year - especially for heavy and powerful forklift trucks and other industrial trucks - for the KION Group brands. There is also an administration, research and storage area. "With the new production facility at KBS, we want to optimally meet the constantly increasing demand for modern lithium-ion batteries and offer customers a high level of delivery reliability," adds Christian Hasenstab, also Managing Director of the still young joint venture. It is expected that the joint venture will benefit from the many years of extensive expertise of the JV partners and the bundling of purchasing activities, especially for lithium-ion cells. By 2023, KION Battery Systems is expected to employ up to 150 people, primarily in the areas of research, development and production.
