Vanderlande signs framework agreement with Brussels Airport

Vanderlande has been awarded a contract to carry out a major modernization of the baggage handling system (BHS) at Brussels Airport. This is an important part of a 20-year framework agreement signed between Brussels Airport Company (BAC) and Vanderlande in March 2019. The proposed operational improvements will enable the airport to cope with the expected growth in annual passenger numbers from 25 to 40 million over the next 25 years.

In order to continue to ensure excellent, compliant airport operations and a first-class aeronautical infrastructure on a daily basis, Brussels Airport is implementing an extensive investment program. This includes the replacement of the existing conventional BHS with Vanderlande's TUBTRAX technology, an upgrade of the higher-level control systems and the integration of new HBS (Hold Baggage Screening) machines to comply with the latest EU Standard 3 regulations.

The new BHS system will connect the existing check-in and transfer areas with the new HBS systems and existing sorters, flight handling carousels and the sorting area in Pier A. By moving one bag per bin, TUBTRAX ensures that every bag is fully monitored and tracked at all times, regardless of where it is in the system.

For this project, Vanderlande will work closely with ENGIE Fabricom Airport Solutions, a major supplier of BHS-related activities at Brussels Airport. In addition, the integration of the new system will be carried out during airport operations, which requires a high level of brownfield experience in terms of both hardware and software. With this in mind, the strengths of Vanderlande and ENGIE Fabricom were combined to create a synergy and provide Brussels Airport with the best possible total solution.

Vanderland's Executive Vice President Airports and Member of the Management Board Andrew Manship adds: "Brussels Airport has a clear vision for the future and we look forward to playing a key role in this. We are proud to have the trust of Brussels Airport Company as a long-term partner. As passenger numbers continue to grow worldwide, we are proud to be recognized for both our cutting-edge technological solutions and our experience and expertise in this field.
