Snacks for the European market
Warehouse automation: Pepsico relies on Mecalux
Mecalux recently installed Pepsico's first automated warehouse in Poland. The international food and beverage company has been based on the Vistula since the 1970s and opened its first plant in Michrów in 1991.
The warehouse with 9,000 storage spaces is part of the plant in Środa Śląska. According to the company, the plant is the multinational's most sustainable in Europe and is responsible for the distribution of thousands of pallets of potatoes per day. The plant, which is the size of seven soccer pitches, "is intended for the production of bags for potato chips and snacks for the European market, especially the German market", according to Pepsico.
Every year, Środa Śląska receives 60,000 tons of potatoes for the production of Lay's bags and 15,000 tons of corn for Doritos nachos. The automated warehouse receives its goods via new rail-guided conveyor systems and pallet conveyor systems. These systems help to optimize the multinational company's supply chain. Pepsico will also implement Mecalux's Easy WMS warehouse management system, which monitors the status of stock in real time. This software will be integrated with the company's ERP system to ensure the correct flow of operations and control the movement of goods from the moment they leave the production area until they are shipped to customers. Pepsico has also recently commissioned Mecalux to equip its plant in Veurne (Belgium).
