SSI Schaefer supports the UN's climate goals
SSI Schaefer is the first intralogistics provider to join the "50 Sustainability and Climate Leaders" initiative. With the aim of promoting sustainable and efficient logistics and strengthening the logistics of companies, the intralogistics specialist wants to make its contribution to achieving the 17 climate goals of the United Nations.
Steffen Bersch, CEO of the SSI Schaefer Group (pictured), comments: "The initiative we have joined is based on the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. We at SSI Schaefer are also committed to these goals. As a leading international provider of storage and logistics systems, we have been working on sustainable solutions for a long time. We need an economically efficient and sustainable logistics organization in order to reduce energy consumption, CO2 emissions and costs while promoting short supply chains and healthy working conditions."
The following references show examples of how SSI Schaefer, as an enabler for its customers with sustainable logistics, contributes to achieving the following UN Sustainable Development Goals:
Goal 2: End hunger, achieve food security and improved nutrition and promote sustainable agriculture.
Goal 7: Ensure access to affordable, reliable, sustainable and modern energy for all.
Goal 9: Build resilient infrastructure, promote inclusive and sustainable industrialization and foster innovation.
Goal 11: Make cities and settlements inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable.
Goals 2, 7 and 9
In the area of food safety and high throughput rates, the distribution center of logistics service provider ORCA Cold Chain Solutions in the Philippines is a good example. One of the challenges facing the food industry is that up to 37% of food produced worldwide is lost due to inadequate packaging, storage and handling. With SSI Schaefer's integrated logistics solution, the integrity of all goods can be ensured and accountability and 100% traceability of goods can be increased. In addition, electricity costs have been reduced by almost 35%.
Goals 7 and 9
SSI Schaefer implemented a distribution center with approx. 28,000 storage locations for Pepperl+Fuchs using a concept and technology. Equipped with hardware and with the aim of reducing space requirements, the automated solution utilizes the performance of Pepperl+Fuchs sensor technology in conjunction with SSI Schaefer logistics software for a predictive maintenance solution.
Goals 2, 7, 9 and 11
According to the UN forecast that 80% of the population will live in cities by 2030, together with the expected population growth, the demand for food production will exceed our most valuable resources. Infarm and SSI Schäfer worked together to enable the move from traditional farming to automated "vertical" farming. Vertical farms are critical to making cities and urban areas inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable. Compared to traditional farming, the innovative solution is up to 400 times more efficient (i.e. on 25 m² farmers can produce the equivalent of almost 2 hectares of arable land), requires 95% less water, 75% less fertilizer and does not require any chemical pesticides.
