Focus on food retail
SSI Schaefer automates new warehouse in Sweden
The online grocery retailer Mathem is growing along with e-commerce in food retailing in the Scandinavian countries. The construction of a new logistics facility by SSI Schaefer in Larsboda, south of Stockholm, is part of the company's further expansion.
Mathem established itself as an online grocery retailer in 2007. Since then, the company has experienced massive expansion with an ever-increasing number of returning customers. Business is currently conducted in Stockholm, Gothenburg, Malmö and the surrounding areas.
The online grocery retailer's range is constantly changing and evolving. A high degree of flexibility is therefore a must. In addition, the solution should meet the increased customer requirements with regard to short-term availability, which was one of the main reasons for the project. SSI Schaefer was chosen for its flexibility and adaptability to Mathem's business requirements and commercial objectives, according to SSI Schaefer.
"E-commerce in the food industry is an exciting area in which we have seen high growth worldwide, especially over the last year. Mathem is a very important project for SSI Schaefer. It clearly shows that we deliver the highest possible efficiency in the market segment where we see continuous growth. It is exciting to contribute to this and help Mathem achieve its goals," explains Hans Ekström, Solution Design Manager Automation at SSI Schaefer.
With the project at Mathem, SSI Schaefer is positioning itself in the e-commerce sector for food. Due to the larger orders and the associated higher capacity requirements, the prerequisites for automated solutions in the food e-commerce sector are higher than in normal online retail. SSI Schaefer has already gained experience in automation in the food industry through several major projects in the Scandinavian countries. For example, SSI Schaefer supplied the largest automation solution in Europe for Coop and a system with a strong focus on sustainability for ASKO.
"In a short time and in close cooperation with SSI Schaefer, we were able to find a solution that enables us to continue our great growth course and achieve our economic goals. Every day, tens of thousands of items in all combinations need to be picked and delivered to our customers as quickly as possible. The solution will also create the best possible working environment for our employees in Sweden. We have come a long way and had to make many important decisions, but now the real work begins to achieve our goals," says Henrik Peitz, COO at Mathem.
Assembly work will start in the fall. The new building is scheduled to go into operation in the second half of 2022.
