Stöcklin: Sustainable high-bay racking construction made of wood and steel

Stöcklin realized a rock wall channel storage system with a customized, hybrid wood-steel rack construction for the storage of drill cores from the Mont Terri rock laboratory in Switzerland. The solution has been nominated as materialfluss product of the year 2025 in category 1: Storage and picking technology.

This hybrid shelving construction is a novelty and combines all the advantages of the two building materials wood and steel in one shelving system. The Federal Office for Buildings and Logistics (BBL) in St. Ursanne (CH) commissioned Stöcklin Logistik with the storage of drill cores. These were to be stored in a channel storage facility in a hall of a former lime factory, which partially encloses an exposed rock face.

In addition, the racks were to be constructed from wood as far as possible. A customized concept was therefore developed by Stöcklin for this special channel storage system, with a single-aisle fully automatic storage and retrieval machine (SRM) from the MASTer series in combination with a Stöcklin Powershuttle for high-performance system technology. A hybrid construction made of wood and steel was designed for the racks, with the vertical parts made of wood and the horizontal parts (beams and channel rails) made of steel.

The solution is nominated in category 1: Warehousing and order picking technology. Have you been impressed by the product? Then let us know your opinion and vote. Click here for the reader voting!
