New logistics center
Liebherr relies on SSI Schäfer
Liebherr is building a new logistics center in Tupelo, Mississippi. SSI Schäfer is responsible for supplying the intralogistics solution. Installation will start in September 2025 and the facility is scheduled to go into operation in 2027.
The Liebherr Group is a family-run technology company with a portfolio of 13 product segments - from tower cranes and mobile cranes to aerospace and earthmoving machines. The new logistics center is part of Liebherr-Logistics GmbH, the Group's internal logistics service provider.
Local position strengthened
The logistics center in Tupelo handles tasks such as warehousing, distribution, pre-assembly, repacking and customs and export processing. Logistics covers products from various segments, such as earthmoving, cranes, concrete technology and components. Further areas are to follow. Jörg Ströbele, Managing Director of Liebherr-Logistics GmbH, emphasizes: "With this facility, we are offering our customers a faster, more efficient service and strengthening our position as an industry leader." The new system is based on modern technology, sustainable design and high scalability. SSI Schäfer was commissioned due to the trusting, long-standing partnership and the ability to seamlessly implement the entire intralogistics sub-project from a single source.
Long-standing partner for intralogistics
As general contractor, SSI Schäfer is responsible for the complete delivery of the warehouse and conveyor technology and coordinates all the intralogistics trades involved. At the center of the facility is a seven-aisle high-bay warehouse with over 39,700 storage locations, which is being built as a self-supporting steel structure in silo construction. This design eliminates the need for a separate hall construction and enables a particularly space- and resource-efficient implementation. Energy-efficient SSI Exyz storage and retrieval machines are used to ensure high-performance and sustainable operation.
450 shuttles, 170,000 container spaces
An 8-aisle shuttle warehouse with over 450 SSI Flexi Shuttles will offer around 170,000 bin storage locations. Thanks to the patented 3D-Matrix Solution, optimum sequencing is guaranteed for small parts picking. Other manual storage areas include PR 600 pallet racking with over 9,500 storage locations, cantilever racking with over 690 storage locations and an oil and hazardous goods warehouse with over 1,100 storage locations. Order picking takes place at five pallet and eight container workstations. Further workstations for repacking and packing are planned. Conveyor technology for pallets, containers and cartons as well as an electric floor conveyor efficiently connect the central trades.
Warehouse management is mapped directly via SAP Extended Warehouse Management (SAP EWM). The implementation is being carried out by SWAN GmbH, a member of the SSI Schäfer Group. In addition to the warehouse management functionalities, SAP EWM is supplemented by the integrated Material Flow System (MFS) and linked directly to the automatic warehouse control systems.
Part of the concept is also that a doubling of the output capacity for future expansions was already taken into account during the planning stage. This means that the capacity of the high-bay warehouse can be significantly increased once again. Jörg Ströbele is already looking forward to the go-live: "We have been working together with SSI Schäfer for many years and are delighted that the new warehouse is also precisely tailored to our requirements. The solution supports us in continuing to offer our customers fast service and reliable spare parts deliveries. This puts us in a good position for the future."
