Heavy-duty logistics: A traditional brewery relocates

Hamburg, 10.08.2018 - The Holsten brewery is relocating with the help of heavy-duty logistics company Gustav Seeland. Since mid-June, the production facilities have been relocated from Hamburg-Altona to the brewery's new site in the Hausbruch district. The Hamburg-based heavy-duty logistics company is responsible for planning and carrying out the move. Dismantling and transportation of the brewery tanks have so far gone without a hitch.

"The mammoth order is a major challenge even for us as experienced heavy-duty logistics specialists. The interaction between people and technology was extraordinary. What's more, the roads in the city center are not designed for such large transports," says Johann Evers, Managing Director of Gustav Seeland."

This unusual transportation project involves numerous challenges. A total of 24 brewing vessels have to be dismantled and transported. The containers are transported to their destination by road and water using special transporters. So far, 14 of the particularly large vessels have been dismantled and temporarily stored at a shipyard for onward transportation. The remaining units are to be transported to their destination using special vehicles.

Temporary storage in the port of Hamburg
The roof of the old brewery was opened and the equipment lifted out of the building with the help of a 700-ton crane to remove the boilers, which were up to 24 meters long. Another 100-ton crane was used to load the tanks onto a special tank bridge developed by Gustav Seeland, after which they were transported to the Cruise Terminal Altona with a police escort along the sometimes narrow streets of Hamburg. After being loaded onto a dock pontoon, the equipment was then taken across the Elbe to a shipyard in the Port of Hamburg for temporary storage. After temporary storage, the brewing kettles will once again be transported by pontoon to a logistics center and then unloaded again with the special cranes and transported on call to the new location and set up there. mm
