Hoyer Group builds modern logistics center

At 38,000 square meters, the new logistics center at the Chempark in Dormagen is one of the largest and most complex supply chain projects that Hoyer has managed from the ground up. In summer 2020, the facilities on the previously unused site were put into operation in stages after a construction phase of around two years.

Extensive analyses of customer requirements and their supply chain processes preceded the design of the construction project. Around 20 employees in five plants now ensure smooth processes along the supply chain of the local chemical industry.

"The logistics center is fully designed and structured according to differentiated customer requirements," says Ulrich Grätz, Global Director Supply Chain Solutions (SCS) at the Hoyer Group. "Extensive analyses, consultations and closely timed project management formed the basis. Despite minor delays due to the effects of the Covid-19 pandemic, we are very satisfied." Hoyer invested around 25 million euros in the logistics center, which was largely completed in June 2020 after two years of construction. Around 20 employees operate state-of-the-art equipment at the site, such as a filling line adapted to customer requirements. Specially developed warehousing software is also used. The complex consists of a total of five sections.

A warehouse with storage space for 10,000 metal boxes filled with synthetic rubber is one of these areas. The Hoyer Group transports these exclusively for a customer from its plant in the Chempark to the warehouse. Here, employees take care of storing and retrieving the boxes, preparing them for shipping and loading them onto trucks for transportation.

In the second section, the pallet warehouse, there are 12,000 storage locations in high racks for various raw materials and finished goods. "The services we provide for our customers include all warehouse-related services such as the storage, warehousing and retrieval of packaged goods on pallets," says Grätz.

Adjacent to the pallet warehouse is the packaging materials warehouse, which has over 3,000 storage locations. Hoyer handles a range of logistics processes such as the storage and warehousing of packaging materials, retrieval and loading. Labeling and packaging inspection as well as various special activities on request are also part of the comprehensive service package. The services are supplemented by the filling and storage of polyurethane dispersions. Two filling systems are located in this area of the logistics center for this purpose. The Hoyer team plans and carries out transports from production to the logistics center and fills dispersions into drums and large containers. "We also handle the storage and handling of filled containers, shipping preparation, order picking, loading and shipping," adds Ulrich Grätz.
