Honorary doctorate for Michael ten Hompel

Prof. Dr. Michael ten Hompel has received another award today. The Senate of the tradition-steeped University of Miskolc unanimously followed the proposal of the Hungarian Institute of Logistics and awarded the Dortmund researcher an honorary doctorate. The university is thus honoring ten Hompel's special scientific achievements in logistics research in Hungary. At the same time, the title is a recognition of the work of the Institute of Logistics and a strengthening of logistics as a scientific discipline at the University of Miskolc. According to the explanatory statement, ten Hompel's appointment helps to raise the status of logistics research in Hungary.
Prof. Dr. Michael ten Hompel is Managing Director of the Fraunhofer IML, Director of the Fraunhofer Institute for Software and Systems Engineering ISST and holds the Chair of Materials Handling and Warehousing at the Technical University of Dortmund. After studying electrical engineering with a specialization in computer engineering at RWTH Aachen University, ten Hompel founded GamBit GmbH (now Vanderlande Industries Logistics Software GmbH) in 1988 and remained its managing partner until 2000. He received his doctorate from the University of Witten/Herdecke in 1991. Since 2000, he has been a full professor at the Chair of Materials Handling and Warehousing at TU Dortmund University and Director of the Fraunhofer IML, which he took over as Managing Director in 2004. ten Hompel has been a member of the Logistics Hall of Fame since 2013.
The University of Miskolc is a technical university in Hungary's fourth largest city, Miskolc, which used to specialize in mining but has long since expanded to include other disciplines. The largest university in northern Hungary is also a partner university of TU Dortmund University.
