Matalan relies on Knapp
Step by step to a modern logistics center
The internationally active British fashion and household goods retailer Matalan has invested heavily in automation in recent years. The company relies on intralogistics expert Knapp for this. In April 2025, the fifth expansion stage with a total volume of several million euros was commissioned.
When it opens in 2027, the distribution center in Knowsley near Liverpool will comprise a total of eight aisles of the Evo Shuttle 1D automated storage system as well as eight pocket induction stations, 16 picking stations, 16 decanting stations and five shipping ramps. What began in 2021 with a single pocket sorter and nine work stations has gradually developed into a state-of-the-art logistics solution. Matalan deliberately opted for a modular approach in order to be able to organize workflows more freely and react flexibly to the market at the same time. A second pocket sorter was added in 2024, accompanied by the Evo Shuttle 1D, six decanting stations, two spiral conveyors and the KiSoft logistics software.
These enhancements enabled Matalan to increase the accuracy of order compilation to 99.8% and extend the order deadline for next-day delivery by six hours. In the same year, a solution for the automated recording of article master data was also integrated with MultiScan. Since 2025, ergonomic goods-to-person workstations have replaced manual picking. Today, the British retailer's distribution center already enables one-touch omnichannel distribution from a shared warehouse stock and processes up to 100,000 online orders per day. All expansions to date have been implemented during ongoing operations
