Providers conquer the supreme discipline

"Tasting awakens the desire to buy!" - the Greek tragedian Eurypides already knew this. This clever phrase has been around for around 2,400 years. It is impossible to date it more precisely, as timekeeping back then was somewhat less accurate than it is today. If you want to jump from tragedy to comedy or drama - it depends, the English would say here - think of the e-commerce boom. With and after it, the deluge ... of returns that men and women who try things out and simply try them out produce year after year. Intralogistics has found an answer to this, as it has for many other things. It has brought efficiency to business models from a deluge that by definition destroys everything with high-performance storage systems - as is so often the case, it was the logistics experts who turned lofty start-up ideas into business-as-usual.

Now e-commerce companies and established food retailers alike are preparing to use food logistics to revolutionize the purchase of food across many channels - in stores, shop-in-shop solutions at petrol stations and airports, online and at drive-in spots. Intralogistics is also in demand here and faces completely different requirements than in e-commerce. In grocery retail, customers like to pick their own orders using shopping carts, their pick rate per hour determines the budget and their skill in turning the shelves. Sounds unpredictable and inefficient, but that's just the way the customer is. In addition, the space behind the shelves is limited and there is rarely enough room for fully automated picking (quite conceivable, why not!). And if you leave the store and switch to your couch at home for convenient food shopping at the click of a mouse, many questions also arise for logistics: How do I combine products that are easy to ship (cornflakes!) and chilled or fresh products in a sensible way? And how do I prevent unsuccessful delivery attempts?

Food logistics is certain to become one of the supreme disciplines of modern general contractors in intralogistics in the coming years. In this supplement, published in collaboration with SSI Schaefer, providers such as SSI Schaefer show what is already feasible and sensible.
