Editorial materialfluss 4/2019
Will it soon be available at every milk churn?
After initial teething troubles, the 5G auction is in full swing (as of the editorial deadline at the beginning of April). The four telecommunications companies Vodafone, Telekom, Telefónica and 1&1 Drillisch are bidding for the individual frequency blocks. But the new standard is not only exciting for mobile communications. Significantly faster transmission rates and much shorter latency make the LTE successor interesting for networking a wide range of devices and machines.
However, it will probably be some time before the new network standard is actually available at every milk churn in Germany (of course, one could argue whether milk churns are still widespread these days) and visions of the future such as autonomous driving become reality.
As a result, localized applications are likely to be implemented first - exciting for industry and intralogistics. The possibilities offered by the new technology for networking in warehouses will also be the subject of the "5G in Industry and Logistics" congress, which will be jointly organized by the industry magazine SCOPE, LT-manager and materialfluss on 23 and 24 October in Darmstadt. You can read more about this on page 6.
This time, the materialfluss ROUND TABLE (from page 8) took a more "back to the roots" approach. Regardless of all the trends in networking, digitalization, automation and the like - an efficient warehouse is often nothing without solid racking technology. Four industry experts explain and discuss what is important and what current developments they are observing in the market.
We hope you enjoy reading it.
