Transatlantic services support growth
The port increased its general cargo throughput by 5.4 percent and its bulk cargo throughput by 7.5 percent. Container handling grew by 6.4 percent to 2.3 million TEU. "The four new transatlantic services of "THE Alliance" and a renewed increase in bulk cargo handling are putting the port on course for growth. Hamburg has now become a hub for traffic with the USA, Mexico and Canada," says Axel Mattern, Port of Hamburg Marketing Director. "In seaborne cargo handling, which includes general cargo as well as bulk cargo, a total of around 5.5 million tons have been unloaded and loaded annually in the Port of Hamburg to date," says Mattern.

Work started on fairway adjustment
Work is also already underway on the fairway adjustment, which is intended to improve the seaward accessibility of the port. "The fairway adjustment will not only make it easier for shipping companies to call at Hamburg, but will also enable larger handling volumes. More draught and a better encounter situation on the Elbe will allow better utilization of transport capacity on the ships," explains Egloff, member of the Port of Hamburg Marketing Executive Board.
