Port of Duisburg: Container throughput stable

At 4.1 million TEU, container throughput at the Port of Duisburg remained at the previous year's record level in 2018. With a share of around 55 percent, container handling is the most important duisport cargo segment.

However, total cargo throughput declined from 68.3 million tons to 65.3 million tons. The main reason for this was the extremely long period of low water, which led to an approximately ten percent decline in bulk cargo. Volumes in the mineral oil and chemical sectors remained stable, while significant declines were recorded for steel last year. Coal handling continues to decline due to the energy transition. In contrast, business with China is becoming increasingly important. Around 35 to 40 trains already run between duisport and a dozen destinations in China every week.

Duisburger Hafen AG is the ownership and management company of the Port of Duisburg. The duisport Group offers full service packages for the port and logistics location in the areas of infrastructure and superstructure, including settlement management.
