Dr. Dirk Claus, Managing Director of Seehafen Kiel GmbH & Co. KG: "A terminal tailored to the needs of our customers has been created in the Ostuferhafen. Kiel's geographical location fits perfectly into the SCA route network." Since the beginning of the month, SCA cargo ships have been calling at Ostuferhafen once a week from Sundsvall, unloading 6,000 tons of forestry products each time. The product range extends from paper for newspaper printing to cardboard paper for high-quality packaging. These are transported onwards from Kiel both within Germany and to the Central European markets. On the return journey to the Swedish east coast, the ships can transport various types of cargo, such as steel, vehicles, construction machinery, general cargo, special goods and recycling materials.

70 new jobs

A total of 25 million euros has been invested in the Ostuferhafen and 70 additional jobs have been created, 50 of which are with the PORT OF KIEL's handling company. The new forest products center comprises the 10,000 m² warehouses No. 1 and No. 2 as well as the slightly smaller Shed 4. The offer is supplemented by a ferry boat hall covering more than 7,000 m², Shed 8, which was newly built in the immediate vicinity of the ship berth. An even larger shed is currently being built adjacent to the existing paper sheds, the topping-out ceremony for which was celebrated in May. This future Shed 5 has a floor area of 200 m x 90 m and thus offers 18,000 m² of storage space. It will be put into operation on October 1. Dirk Claus: "All partners involved in this project have done an excellent job. Thanks to the first-class terminal infrastructure, Kiel offers optimal conditions for the handling and storage of industrial and general cargo, raw materials and forest products." The official opening of the new SCA logistics center is scheduled for November 11.
