Hamburg remains optimistic: New container gantry cranes for mega-ships
HHLA now has a total of eight such bridges at CTB. As soon as the three new gantry cranes have gone into operation, CTB will be able to handle ships with a capacity of 20,000 standard containers (TEU) and more at two berths (if they come into the Port of Hamburg, one is inclined to add). The three container gantry cranes arrived in Hamburg in mid-August after a journey of almost ten weeks. The container gantry cranes produced near Shanghai were tested on site by HHLA employees before being taken over by world market leader ZPMC. They will be prepared for use over the next few months and then undergo final acceptance.
Dr. Stefan Behn, member of the Executive Board of Hamburger Hafen und Logistik AG (HHLA), emphasizes the importance of the new handling equipment: "The bridges that have now arrived are a further building block in CTB's long-term expansion programme. The number of calls by particularly large ships has been increasing for some time. It is therefore important for us to be able to offer our shipping company customers two berths at CTB in future, where we can handle these particularly large ships. This ensures the high productivity that our customers are accustomed to and provides the necessary flexibility in handling."
The new gantry cranes from ZPMC are designed for container ships with 24 container rows across and, thanks to their 74 meter long jibs, are very well equipped for ships with a loading capacity of 20,000 TEU and more. Such ships handle 5,000 to 6,000 containers (70,000 to 84,000 tons of cargo weight) per call in Hamburg. The gantry cranes have also been optimized in terms of boom height: they can handle nine containers standing on top of each other on deck. The new gantry cranes can also operate in tandem. This means that it is possible to move two 40-foot containers or four 20-foot containers with one lift. Each gantry crane weighs 2,400 tons and has a maximum payload of 110 tons.
