Fairway adjustment
Encounter box facilitates navigation on the Elbe
Since 29.01, ships with a combined width of up to 98 meters have been able to pass each other safely on a widened section of the Elbe, the so-called meeting box. The five-kilometre stretch now has a width of 385 meters. The fairway of the 36-kilometre stretch between Wedel and the mouth of the Störmündung has also been widened from 300 to 320 meters. From today, ships with a combined width of 92 meters can safely pass or overtake each other on this section.
"With the first fairway widenings of the Elbe now implemented, we are on the right track and are immediately improving the conditions for large seagoing vessels to call at the port," says Axel Mattern, Port of Hamburg Marketing Director. "This is good news for shipping and our port customers at the start of the year."
New berth completed
The waiting berth in Brunsbüttel, which has been available as a berth since the end of 2019, has also been completed. Tide-dependent ships that are unable to reach the tidal window for unforeseeable reasons can wait there until the next low water phase.
Increased efficiency
Prof. Dr.-lng. Hans-Heinrich Witte, President of the Directorate-General for Waterways and Shipping, explained: "The widening will allow shipping on the Elbe to benefit from the fairway adjustment for the first time. This is good for the efficiency of the waterway, for the flow of traffic and for safety."
Deepening work is currently underway on the entire stretch. This will benefit both the tide-dependent and the tide-independent section with one meter more unloading depth. This work will be completed next year.
