3D crane simulator in the Port of Duisburg
The duisport Group has unveiled its own crane simulator in Duisburg's free port: This is not only intended to set new standards in the field of technical development in the logistics industry, but the inland port is also investing in the training and further education of its own employees.
Under the project management of duisport Executive Board member Professor Thomas Schlipköther, the crane simulator was manufactured in the USA and adapted to the requirements of the Port of Duisburg. The manufacturer is the company GlobalSim.
Simulation especially for inland ports
While using the simulator, employees operate crane systems in a virtual environment that is modeled on the real crane and the scenery in the Port of Duisburg. The so-called "piggy back simulation" is specially designed to meet the needs of inland ports.
The system features seven 4k flat screens based on a proprietary 3-DOF (three-dimensional space) motion. Users feel the entire simulator move and shift in a realistic way, just like the actual equipment moves when operating a real crane.
Various weather conditions can be displayed
An instructor control station maintains constant contact between the system and the user. This allows the operator to simulate individual scenarios under guidance. Including difficult weather conditions and special emergency situations. Such scenarios cannot simply be practiced on a real crane during daily operations.
"The duisport training center in Duisburg's free port has had its own rail simulator since the beginning of 2019 and is an integral part of our long-term training and development strategy. The addition of the crane simulator makes the duisport Group's training program unique in Europe," explains duisport CEO Erich Staake.
