UPS starts delivery with e-cargo bikes in Karlsruhe

UPS now wants to implement its sustainable delivery concept with e-cargo bikes in Karlsruhe. These are particularly suitable for narrow streets. The drivers will pick up and deliver the parcels from a micro-depot.

UPS launched deliveries with e-cargo bikes in Hamburg back in 2012. The company operates further sustainable city logistics projects in more than 30 major cities worldwide with delivery on foot and by bicycle. "Our city logistics solutions offer healthier and more sustainable delivery for everyone who lives and works in the city. We are constantly looking for ways to provide the best possible service while reducing our environmental impact," says Rainer Kiehl, City Logistics Project Manager at UPS Germany. "By using electrically assisted cargo bikes, UPS is helping to reduce emissions and improve air quality in Karlsruhe." UPS uses 9,300 low-emission vehicles worldwide and wants to find out which alternative fuels and vehicles work best on different routes. The company uses all-electric, hybrid-electric and hybrid-hydraulic vehicles as well as delivery vans that run on ethanol, compressed natural gas (CNG), liquefied natural gas (LNG) and propane. E-cargo bikes are part of UPS's large-scale strategy to continuously electrify its delivery fleet.
