Delivery by drone: UPS focuses on new strategies

UPS Flight Forward is the name of the new subsidiary with which UPS wants to take off as a drone operator. The company is set to become one of the first fully certified drone operators in the USA.

Through its new subsidiary, UPS recently applied to the US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) for Part 135 certification for the use of commercial drones in its network.

Commercial routine flights by drone in prospect

The unique feature: unlike more limited certifications, the requested UPS Flight Forward would confer legal designation as a certified operator of an air carrier. This would allow UPS to become one of the first fully certified companies in the United States to conduct routine commercial drone flights in its operation. Drone flights beyond the pilot's line of sight and for day and night flights would be within the company's grasp.

"UPS is embracing new technologies to transform the nature of its business," said Scott Price, UPS Chief Transformation and Strategy Officer. "Launching the drone delivery business and applying for certification for regular drone operations is historic for UPS and for the drone and logistics industry as a whole."

Already implemented: Drone deliveries in the healthcare sector

Currently, UPS operates drone deliveries in the healthcare industry under FAA Part 107 certification. In March, the company initiated the first FAA-approved use of a drone for routine commercial flights in the U.S. In Raleigh, North Carolina, UPS is transporting medical specimens between WakeMed Hospital and its campus , supplementing its courier service. The company is looking to expand its drone delivery service to other hospitals or campus environments.
