Logistics terminal
Sustainable terminal in the south of Berlin
DHL Freight is building a new terminal in Berlin-Marienfelde. With the new building on a former Brenner site, the company is expanding its German and European network.
The company attaches great importance to sustainability at the facility and relies on renewable energies for its operations. A freight forwarding facility with a total area of 20,000 square meters is being built on the site, which will include an office building with 5,200 square meters of space and 49 loading gates. The new, sustainable facility will replace the existing terminal in the city, which has reached its capacity limits with the growing business. Another DHL Freight site is located just outside Berlin in Wustermark. The new terminal in Marienfelde is intended in particular to further improve the distribution of freight and shipments over the last mile in Berlin. Completion and commissioning are planned for summer 2024.
"I am proud that this new location not only expands our network, but also underlines our commitment to more sustainable logistics," explains Dr. Thomas Vogel, CEO DHL Freight DACH, UK & IE. Modern sustainability solutions with alternative drives in local transport, such as electric forklifts, trucks powered by natural gas (CNG) and, in the future, battery-electric trucks will be integrated. To drive technological progress and reduce the ecological footprint at the same time, the sustainability concept also includes a heat pump, a cistern for rainwater, e-charging infrastructure with green electricity for cars and trucks in local and long-distance transport and a photovoltaic system. The ground-breaking ceremony for the project took place in mid-November 2023 and the freight forwarding facility is scheduled for completion in mid-2024. The project is being realized by Operatio, while Bremer Berlin-Brandenburg is responsible for project management and implementation.
