Logistics service provider
pfenning logistics once again certified for safe pharmaceutical warehousing
The pfenning logistics group receives recertification for the GDP certificate (Good Distribution Practice) acquired in 2017 at the Heddesheim site.
The audit assesses "good distribution practices" in the handling of medicinal products for human use and covers the storage of temperature-controlled pharmaceutical products in the temperature ranges 2 to 8 and 15 to 25 degrees Celsius. It not only assesses technical safety and hygiene requirements, but also the qualifications of employees in handling pharmaceutical products.
The company is also committed to sustainability: according to the company, the contract logistics provider's logistics centers, which have been awarded DGNB Platinum, are among the top 10 most resource-efficient and environmentally friendly industrial buildings in Europe. The multicube rhein-neckar logistics center at the company headquarters in Heddesheim generates an electricity output of 8.1 megawatts with 33,000 solar modules on a roof area of eleven hectares. This can supply around 5,000 households with electricity and at the same time save almost 5,200 tons of carbon dioxide per year. The installation of a rooftop solar system for the more recent multicube rheinhessen logistics center on a roof area of 50,000 square meters is currently being planned.
All pfenning logistics warehouse locations built before 2018 were also equipped with environmentally friendly LED lighting. In addition to economic benefits, this means carbon dioxide savings of 15% to 50%, depending on the location and site. At the Heddesheim logistics center alone, electricity consumption has demonstrably fallen by 10%.
The contract logistics company has been increasingly using LNG-powered trucks in its system and distribution transports since 2018. At the start of the upcoming year-end business, a total of 24 vehicles are in use in local and long-distance transport. The operation of a further 35 vehicles is currently being evaluated. The LNG vehicles have a tank capacity of 1,080 liters. This means that ranges of up to 1,600 kilometers can be reliably achieved. This saves up to 15% carbon dioxide compared to a conventional diesel drive. The continuous modernization of the vehicle fleet and equipping it with the new telematics systems enables not only the collection of standard data but also an analysis of driving behavior. Thanks to the additional use of driving trainers, pfenning logistics reduced its total carbon dioxide emissions by almost 10% in 2019 compared to the same period in the previous year.
