The parcel and express service provider DPD has taken delivery of nine VW e-Crafters in Hamburg. The all-electric vans will soon be used on delivery tours in Hamburg city center.
Goal: locally emission-free parcels
DPD's goal for Hamburg city center: by the summer of this year, the company aims to deliver and collect 100 percent of parcels in Hamburg city center with zero local emissions. The purchase of the new VW e-Crafter is being supported as part of the Zukunft.de funding project.
Significant progress with the new e-Crafter
DPD has been testing two pre-series models of the e-Crafter in daily operation in Hamburg since the beginning of 2018. The new vehicles are now set to drive forward fully electric parcel delivery in Hamburg city center.
"After numerous tests, we are switching to fully electric vehicles in Hamburg city center on a larger scale than ever before," explains Gerd Seber, Group Manager City Logistics and Sustainability at DPD Germany. "With the acquisition of nine VW e-Craftern we are already very close to achieving this goal: we are delighted that we will soon be able to supply large parts of Hamburg city center with parcels locally emission-free."
Vehicle mix as a solution
DPD also relies on cargo bikes, e-scooters and micro-depots for emission-free parcel delivery in Hamburg city center. Three cargo bikes from the manufacturer Radkutsche are already in use, as well as two e-scooters from the Danish manufacturer EWII.
