Combating capacity bottlenecks
Geodis responds to coronavirus crisis and expands air charter and rail transportation
Logistics service provider Geodis is responding to the capacity bottlenecks caused by COVID-19 by extensively expanding its existing services. This includes the establishment of new charter flights between Europe, Asia, the USA and Latin America as well as alternative transport options by rail.
Geodis launched its first charter flight from Frankfurt am Main to Shanghai on February 12. In response to the growing demand westwards, the first return flight between Liège (Belgium) and Shanghai Pudong International followed on February 21. Since February 28, the company has been offering weekly shuttle flights between Frankfurt and Shanghai. Departures from Shanghai are on Tuesdays. The current flight schedule will remain in force until the end of March and will be extended in line with demand.
Alternatively, Geodis offers rail transportation solutions between China and Germany. These include direct connections between the Chinese economic centers of Xi'an and Chongqing and Hamburg and Duisburg. The transit time for standard services is 18 days, the express service between Xi'an and Hamburg twelve days.
The newly introduced direct charter service from Hong Kong to Guadalajara, Mexico, was also extended after its launch. The next departure from Hong Kong took place on March 22. At the same time, Geodis announced the launch of a new transatlantic service between Europe and Chicago from March 21. Return flights will be operated four times a week.
"With our transport and logistics solutions, we support our customers in reacting quickly and flexibly to the current situation," says Thomas Kraus, Geodis President & CEO North, East and Central Europe.
