City logistics project
DPD uses swap bodies as micro depots in Constance
The parcel and express service provider DPD is relying on a new form of city logistics in Constance on Lake Constance: a swap body now serves as a micro-depot on site and thus enables local emission-free parcel handling in the delivery area.
Delivery by cargo bike
Since April, deliveries in the city center of Constance have been made by cargo bike from a centrally located parking space. A container now serves as a micro-depot on site. This is not only a place to park the cargo bikes overnight, but also a transfer point for the parcels, which are delivered in the morning and then taken to the recipients on the electrically powered bikes. This is the first project in which DPD has converted a swap body in a public space into a micro-depot.
Autonomous power supply planned for cargo bikes
In the initial phase, only one tour per cargo bike is planned. The cargo bikes can be parked in the swap body after delivery. The Villingen-Schwenningen depot is currently still working with exchangeable batteries, which are brought to the micro-depot together with the parcels in the morning. However, the container is still to be equipped with a solar panel to enable the bikes to be self-sufficiently powered. "Cargo bikes are particularly suitable for delivery areas where we deliver to a large number of private consignees," explains Gerd Seber, Group Manager City Logistics & Sustainability at DPD Germany.
