Depot in Mannheim starts operations
DPD increases parcel capacities
Last weekend the new DPD depot in Mannheim opened for business. Initially around 16,500 parcels per day will be processed there on an area of over 5,000 square meters.
After a start-up phase, the new parcel system should be able to sort up to 20,000 parcels a day. The operational business will be managed by around 180 employees and represents an important relief for the site in nearby Worms.
DPD has reached the limits of its capacity at the parcel sorting center in Worms, and further expansion was not possible there. However, no suitable space could be found in the region for a new building. The parcel and express service provider has therefore acquired and upgraded an existing property in Mannheim, from where parcels will be delivered to the cities of Mannheim, Heidelberg and Walldorf, among others.
A new, modern parcel sorting system was built inside. It was installed by Budde Fördertechnik, a long-standing partner of DPD. The system has extremely low-consumption and low-noise motors and drives. The new depot still offers scope for further capacity expansion. If required, around 3,500 more parcels can be processed per day.
In addition to relieving the depots in Worms, depot manager Daniel Ay sees further advantages of the Mannheim site: "By moving to Mannheim, we are overcoming the Rhine as a natural border. Previously, every driver had to cross the river every morning - with a limited number of highway bridges. This saves time: we are now 35 kilometers and therefore around half an hour closer to the delivery area, which also saves on travel distances and CO2 emissions."
