The international express service provider DHL Express and the drone manufacturer EHang have entered into a strategic partnership. The common goal: an automated and intelligent drone delivery solution for China's metropolitan areas.

First route undergoing trials
The starting signal was given with celebrations for the maiden flight at the EHang Command and Control Center in Guangzhou. The concept is already being tested on one flight route: From now on, shipments will be transported daily between the DHL service center in the city of Liaobu in Guangdong province and a customer's site eight kilometers away. The latest Falcon drone from EHang is being used on the route. It has eight rotors and includes several redundant systems for comprehensive backup as well as intelligent flight control modules. The drones can transport up to five kilograms of additional weight per flight.

Delivery time: from 40 to eight minutes
The typical delivery time by road is to be reduced from around 40 minutes to just eight minutes. The cooperation partners hope that this will not only reduce energy consumption and improve the carbon footprint, but also cut costs by up to 80 percent.

"Combining strengths"
"We are very pleased to take a decisive step together with EHang in the field of automated logistics solutions, combining the strength of the world's largest international express company with the expertise of one of the most important drone manufacturers," said Wu Dongming, CEO of DHL Express China.
