"Lean and Green Star"
ALDI SOUTH reduces CO2 emissions in logistics by more than 25 percent
The non-profit initiative "Lean and Green" honors ALDI SOUTH for its ongoing commitment to reducing greenhouse gases in logistics. The discounter received its second "Lean and Green Star" at the German Logistics Congress in Berlin on October 24, 2019.
The award underlines the sustainability of the measures with which the discounter is making its logistics increasingly climate-friendly. Even before joining the "Lean and Green" initiative in 2014, ALDI SOUTH had already begun to continuously reduce the CO2 emissions of its goods transportation - by more than 25 percent to date. "We are particularly pleased to receive this award," said Florian Kempf, Deputy Managing Director of Logistics & Services at ALDI SOUTH, at the award ceremony.
"It shows that we are serious about our commitment and are focusing on sustainable solutions rather than short-term effects when it comes to climate protection." Renewal of the vehicle fleet and use of innovative technology With the second "Lean and Green Star", the non-profit initiative rewards not only the continuous optimization of existing processes and transport routes, but also the testing of innovative technology. For example, the discounter regularly replaces older vehicles with new models with modern, economical engines. All trucks used to transport goods - whether from the ALDI SOUTH fleet or from freight forwarders - already meet at least the EURO 5 emissions standard. In addition, alternative technologies are constantly being tested for their suitability for everyday use.
Since 2018, the company has been using four natural gas trucks for the daily transportation of goods and is testing the extent to which they prove to be a climate-friendly alternative to diesel models. ALDI SOUTH is also testing an innovative electric truck in North Rhine-Westphalia - the first 40-tonne articulated lorry with an integrated refrigeration unit in Germany. The vehicle and the transport refrigeration system are powered by 100 percent TÜV-certified green electricity from hydropower and solar power from the photovoltaic systems on the ALDI Süd store roofs.
