Around the warehouse - Lighting
Always in the right light
Efficient warehouse technology is the basic prerequisite for ever faster goods handling in times of growing online trade. This is no longer just about moving goods. materialfluss author Klaus Hiemer provides an overview of the market.
Surrounding trades such as the lighting in a warehouse also play an important role. It increases the concentration and motivation of employees. As a survey by materialfluss revealed, leading manufacturers of lighting solutions rely on networked systems. These can be controlled according to use, thus always putting the warehouse in the right light and are also energy-efficient.
From Steinel Professional's point of view, there are already a number of ways to switch light according to demand and usage in the logistics sector. "The topic of 'digital light' is taking center stage. Software-controlled brightness via app with a smartphone or tablet is part of digitalization and will continue to change the lighting world in the coming years," outlines Frank Specht, Sales Manager at Steinel. The networking of luminaires and lighting systems plays a role here - be it by connecting several lamps via radio or Bluetooth or the complex control of an entire area. "Situation-adapted light will become the norm and operation will become even simpler," he says.
The company has developed its new RS Pro Connect 5100 LED linear luminaire especially for use in warehouses. An integrated sensor controls the light depending on how the area in question is used. "It was important to us to significantly simplify the replacement of the existing solution, commissioning and networking," explains Frank Specht. The LED can be installed in place of the previous luminaire using an adapter. It is operated via an app on tablets, for example, and networked via Bluetooth. It also offers important convenience functions to adapt to the respective situation and save energy.
Soothing for the human eye
Lunux GmbH also sees a clear trend towards intelligent lighting control. In this respect, both radio-based control options and daylight and presence-dependent controls using integrated or networked sensors play a major role. "Sensors measure the current lighting conditions and take into account the amount of daylight entering the hall. The result is uniform illumination throughout the day, which is pleasant for the human eye and makes work easier," explains Dominic Jünemann, Head of Key Account Sales at Lunux. Energy savings can also be achieved because intelligent control prevents over-illumination. Lunux is seeing increased demand for presence-dependent control, which often saves hall operators up to 80 percent in energy costs. According to Dominic Jünemann, the principle is simple: "Only hall areas that are currently in use are illuminated, while unused areas are automatically supplied with minimal safety or basic lighting."
"Light should promote concentration, motivation and well-being among employees."Joachim Geiger Director Marketing at the Trilux Group
In 2018, Lunux wants to score points with its comprehensive lighting solutions and service. At the Light + Building trade fair, the company is adding a single-row line to its tried-and-tested Q-Rail continuous-row lighting system. Thanks to the IP20 protection class and an output of 2,600 to 6,000 lumens, it is suitable for a wide range of applications. "The development focus was on the complex optics with a homogeneous appearance. It has low glare and can therefore also be installed at low heights," says Dominic Jünemann.
Exploiting optimization potential
According to Trilux GmbH & Co KG, the demands on lighting are becoming increasingly complex. "In addition to supporting the visual task and safety, light should promote concentration, motivation and well-being among employees. At the same time, it must be efficient and economical," explains Joachim Geiger, Director Marketing at Trilux. Added to this is the flexibility of being able to react quickly to changing room usage before expensive operational downtimes occur. "Our solutions can also be integrated into a higher-level building management system via open interfaces, for example. They offer the opportunity to read out and evaluate energy data, exploit optimization potential and minimize maintenance costs," says Geiger.
"Energy efficiency continues to play a key role in warehouse and logistics lighting."Daniel Hangst Product Manager at Herbert Waldmann GmbH & Co.
At Light + Building, Trilux will be presenting its E-Line LED, among other things. This is a continuous-row lighting system that provides the right light depending on requirements. Nextrema G3 LED is another system that has been specially developed for high demands in logistics. "The luminaire is reliable, requires only low operating costs, is energy-efficient and achieves a high quality of light," summarizes Joachim Geiger.
Key role for energy efficiency
Saving resources is also an important trend from the perspective of Herbert Waldmann GmbH & Co. "Energy efficiency continues to play a key role in the lighting of warehouses and logistics halls. After all, more than half of the energy consumption can be saved when refurbishing old systems," says Daniel Hangst, Product Manager at Waldmann. In addition to LED technology, daylight and presence sensors also help to significantly reduce costs without having to do without good light when needed. "The interplay between light and the corresponding activity is becoming ever more closely linked. There are even initial approaches to linking order picking with lighting and thus optimizing it," explains Hangst.
"The result is uniform illumination of the hall throughout the day, which is pleasant for the human eye and makes work easier."Dominic Jünemann Head of Sales Key Accounts at Lunux
In addition to the Acaneo highbay floodlight, the company focuses on the Taureo LED continuous-row lighting system for lighting storage areas. "Both systems are easy to install, particularly energy-efficient and feature optimized glare control," says Daniel Hangst. He describes the latter as an important function so that warehouse employees are not severely dazzled when looking up from the forklift truck, for example. Waldmann's solutions can be networked as required and are easy to integrate into building management systems. Klaus Hiemer
