duisport records double-digit growth in container handling

Container traffic at Duisburger Hafen AG (duisport) was significantly higher in the first half of 2021 than in the previous year. Container throughput amounted to around 2.2 million TEU in the first half of 2021, an increase of 10 percent compared to the previous year (2020: 2 million TEU).

Tonnage growth in combined transport even recorded an increase of 11%. Ship handling increased by 5 percent and the rail sector by 14 percent compared to the previous year. Growth was driven in particular by goods traffic with China and the European routes with Poland and Southern Europe. Both the expansion of existing routes and new destinations, e.g. Spain, contributed to this.

"This is a very pleasing and positive development. We also expect strong growth in combined transport in the second half of the year," emphasizes duisport CEO Erich Staake. "Both maritime volumes and continental traffic will increase. Fortunately, we will also be able to put a new container terminal at logport VI into operation at the end of this year, which will further increase handling capacities at the Duisburg location."

"The handling of containers, swap bodies and trailers currently accounts for over 60 percent of the total handling volume in the Port of Duisburg. The structural change has also been successful in this important growth segment," concluded Erich Staake. At 29.5 million tons, total cargo throughput in the first half of 2021 was slightly above the previous year's result (2020: 29.2 million tons). The strong growth in combined transport more than compensated for declines in the fossil fuel sector.
