Port of Duisburg withdraws from Belarus

Duisburger Hafen AG is withdrawing from all business activities in Belarus with immediate effect. This decision was taken in close consultation between the Executive Board, the Supervisory Board and the shareholders in light of the war in Ukraine and the support provided by Belarus.

duisport will divest both its minority shareholding (0.59 percent) in the international development company of the Great Stone industrial and logistics park and its shareholding in Eurasian Rail Gateway CJCS (38.9 percent), which has planned the construction and operation of a bimodal terminal. In addition, the representative office in Minsk has already been closed for good.

At the time of the investment, Germany and the EU were in a constructive dialog with Belarus. The developments since the last presidential elections and the support for the Russian attack on Ukraine were not foreseeable, the company reports.

"Our thoughts are with the people in Ukraine, and we hope for a quick end to the war," says duisport CEO Markus Bangen. "We are drawing a clear line under our involvement in Belarus. We have been critically questioning our activities there since the elections in 2020 and have examined our options for action at the instigation of the Chairman of the Supervisory Board, but as part of an international consortium we could not and cannot take any unilateral steps. In the current situation, however, it is all the more important for us to send a clear signal, cease all business relations with Belarus and push ahead with concrete negotiations with our co-shareholders for a swift withdrawal from the companies," Markus Bangen continued.
