Sustainable production

The topic of green logistics has been on the agenda of intralogistics provider Stöcklin Logistik, based in Switzerland, since 2010. During the planning and construction of a sustainable technology center in Laufen (completion June 2020), the company saw the opportunity to address and implement the topic holistically for production, buildings, infrastructure and employees.

The entire machinery was renewed and modern, sustainable production processes were implemented. According to the company, this has enabled a significant improvement in work ergonomics for employees as well as consistent internal sustainability management. From hand pallet trucks and AGVs to fully automated end-to-end system solutions, everything is planned, designed and produced under one roof without long distances, including racking systems and an after-sales service.

Sustainable energy management expertise

The entire infrastructure was set up sustainably with 2,250 photovoltaic modules including a storage battery, 60 geothermal probes, electromobility in the vehicle fleet and, for example, regional products in the staff restaurant. The resulting energy management expertise is increasingly being requested by customers and gives Stöcklin the opportunity to provide advice on photovoltaic systems and feed-in, for example. As with a current project at a well-known pharmaceutical company nearby, where Stöcklin provided advice on the concept for controlling production processes by feeding in renewable energy. In addition, a future-oriented modernization of the existing plant technology and control system is intended to achieve resource-saving production and thus contribute to a significant reduction in the carbon footprint.

Lifecycle companion

The Long-Life Service guarantees a longer and more efficient service life for the system technology and controls and enables energy-efficient operation. Increasingly, both existing and new customers are requesting modernization and expansion projects in which the best ecological and economical solutions are sought. In recent years, for example, Stöcklin has modernized automated intralogistics systems for Miele and Arvato in Gütersloh and this year was commissioned to modernize a large distribution warehouse for the Otto Group. Stöcklin also supports its customers with software updates and new warehouse strategies so that they can make even better use of their energy resources.

Mutual challenges

Stöcklin is increasingly being challenged as a partner by customers with the demand for innovative, resource-saving technologies and intelligent system control, as well as more sustainable materials, for example the use of Green Steel for system technology or Timber for shelving technology.

"We value our customers' challenges and are happy to take them on. For example, we have already been able to realize several projects in wood and would like to drive this forward, as we are convinced of the intelligent sustainability of Timber. As a family business, in which the next generation is now involved, we feel particularly committed to sustainability and want to set an example. Together with our customers as partners, we want to achieve a future-oriented sustainable impact," explains Jürg Frefel, Group CEO of the company.
