Toyota MH introduces SSAB Zero steel for LHM230 hand pallet trucks

Toyota Material Handling Europe has reduced the CO₂ emissions of its Toyota LHM230 hand pallet truck "from the cradle to the factory gate" by 18 percent. This was made possible by using SSAB Zero steel for the forks and frame.

Steel is a key component of industrial trucks, but conventional steel production generates considerable CO₂ emissions. "This is precisely why our collaboration with SSAB is so important. We combine their expertise in the field of CO₂-reduced steels with our goal of reducing emissions along the entire value chain," says Camilla Åkerman, Program Manager Fossil-Free Products at Toyota Material Handling Europe.

Green steel for volume model

SSAB and Toyota Material Handling started their collaboration with the top-selling Toyota Lifter LHM230 hand pallet truck to achieve maximum impact in CO₂ reduction. Both the forks and frame of this model are made from SSAB Zero steel. This steel is also used in the production of the forks of three electric Toyota BT Levio low lift pallet trucks - the LWE130, LWE140 and LWE160.

"By using SSAB Zero, we are reducing emissions in the forks and frames of our hand pallet trucks by up to 75 percent. This is equivalent to decarbonizing the entire product by 18 percent - from the cradle to the factory gate," says Per Fyrenius, Senior Vice President Corporate Development at Toyota Material Handling Europe.

Challenging certification

The introduction of SSAB Zero required verification to ensure both performance and compatibility with production. "The biggest challenge was to verify the material. A robust verification plan was needed to ensure the required performance. This was a challenge, but the results were very positive," says Camilla Åkerman.

Toyota Material Handling Europe produces around 80,000 hand pallet trucks and 15,000 electric pallet trucks every year. The company sees the partnership with SSAB as an important enabler of its long-term decarbonization strategy. Encouraged by the results, Toyota Material Handling Europe is now exploring further opportunities to use low-carbon materials across its product portfolio.
