Sorting and conveying more efficiently

Orchestra Prémaman is a retail chain offering maternity wear, children's clothing and baby accessories. Founded in 1995, the company employs over 2,500 people and operates around 300 stores, mainly in France, Belgium and Switzerland. In 2020, Orchestra Prémaman announced the centralization of its logistics activities in a 120,000 m² warehouse in the north of France. The aim is to significantly expand the online business.

Orchestra Prémaman relocated its main logistics warehouse from the south to the north of France and commissioned Transitic with a complete mechanical retrofit of the sorting and conveyor system. The sorting system and conveyor technology were fully optimized and automated to process orders, store replenishment and returns accurately and efficiently. Transitic installed a one kilometer long, efficient conveyor system as well as an automatic split-tray sorter specifically designed for textiles and accessories.

Automatic split tray sorter

The sorter was already present in the old warehouse. It was dismantled, modernized by Transitic and reinstalled. The sorter was redesigned to meet the new requirements. It is now equipped with hinged trays that guide the items to the respective target stations. At the destination, the trays open automatically and drop the items into boxes, bags or cartons, for example. The sorting outfeeds can now also process both cartons and flexible containers. Chutes have been installed under the hinged trays, which can guide the products in two different directions and thus ensure greater flexibility throughout the entire sorting system. The sorter was also newly installed with eight feeding points. At these, the operators load the items according to the instructions on the operator screen. The outfeeds are equipped with a pick-to-light system that guides the employees and minimizes errors. The sorter can process up to 14,400 items per hour.

Parallel to the sorter, a conveyor system was modernized that includes both floor-based and suspended components. This is supplemented by two telescopic conveyors that unload the trucks and automatically feed them into the system. The conveyors transport the parcels to various zones in the warehouse:

- Sorting of parcels at eight stations for storage in picking racks
- Delivery and automatic feeding to the incoming goods sorter
- Returning empty containers and supplying the picking areas
- Delivery to the e-commerce sorter area

The result

The sorting process has been optimized and errors virtually eliminated. On average, the sorter processes over 150,000 items a day. The storage space is used efficiently.
